Psychiatric assessment and follow-up for children and adolescents, by video consultation
This consultation is for children and adolescents showing emotional distress or changes in behaviour — anxiety, attention difficulties, depressive symptoms, or shifts in how they function at school and at home. Many are referred by a paediatrician, their usual doctor, or the school, when specialist input is warranted.
During the consultation, the child psychiatrist talks with the parents or carers and with the child or adolescent, as far as their age allows. They gather the developmental history, the school context, and any earlier assessments to reach a working diagnosis and set out a plan, which may involve psychotherapy, coordination with the school, and, when indicated, medication. Follow-up visits review progress and adjust what is needed.
Video consultation suits assessment, guidance, and follow-up, but it has limits. It does not replace urgent care in a crisis, nor certain assessments that require an in-person examination; when the evaluation calls for it, the doctor refers you to an in-person visit or the appropriate service.

How to prepare
Whenever their age allows, the child or adolescent should take part in at least some of the consultation. Gather school information in advance — reports, teacher notes, or behaviour records — and copies of any earlier assessments (psychology, paediatrics, or others). Choose a quiet space, free of interruptions, where the child feels comfortable to speak, and keep any current medication list to hand.
