About this consultation

Breastfeeding support by video, with latch observation and a review of feeding records

This consultation is for mothers who are breastfeeding and for pregnant women who want to prepare for it before birth. The focus is on the mother-baby pair and takes each family's expectations and choices into account, without imposing a single way to breastfeed.

You can raise the most common difficulties — sore or cracked nipples, engorgement, questions about latch or sucking, or the feeling that your milk supply is not enough. If you wish, you can show a feed on camera so the professional can observe the latch and positioning; from that, and from your feeding and weight records, the guidance is adjusted and a plan is set for the days ahead.

A video consultation does not replace a physical exam: it cannot palpate the breast or weigh the baby accurately. If there are signs of mastitis that need examination and antibiotics, a suspected abscess, a need to assess tongue-tie, or insufficient weight gain that calls for serial weighing, the professional explains what is happening and refers you for an in-person assessment, arranging the next steps.

Signs of mastitis with high fever and malaise, or a baby who is unresponsive, has a dry nappy or refuses to feed, require in-person care or an urgent medical contact.

When it makes sense

  • Nipple pain or cracks during feeds
  • Questions about latch, positioning or the baby's sucking
  • Breast engorgement or a sense of low milk supply
  • Preparing to breastfeed during pregnancy
  • Returning to work and organising milk expression

How to prepare

Before the consultation, keep the baby nearby: if a feed happens during the call, you can show it on camera and the professional can watch the latch in real time. Gather your feeding records (times and duration) and the baby's recent weights, if you have them, to help track progress. Choose a spot with good lighting, especially if you plan to show the latch, and write down your questions beforehand so none are forgotten.
